Born and raised in Harar, he lived in the Bedri Beri area and became widely respected for his deep knowledge of Islamic law and scholarship.
A library of knowledge
During the 1950s and 1960s, his home was renowned for its remarkable collection of Islamic manuscripts and books. His private library contained works covering the Qur’an, Hadith, Arabic language, Fiqh, Seerah, mathematics, medicine, astronomy, agriculture, poetry, and other fields of knowledge. Alongside the library of the Harari scholar Kabir Jami Abogn, his collection was an important source of knowledge for scholars seeking references on matters of Islamic law.
Titles and service
Faqih Yonis was known by several scholarly titles. Much of his life was devoted to serving as a Sharia judge in Harar and later in Addis Ababa. He was respected for his courage, fairness, knowledge, and commitment to judging according to Islamic law.
Mediator during occupation
He was also remembered for his role as a mediator during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia. Following the assassination attempt against Rodolfo Graziani in Addis Ababa in 1937 and the subsequent violence against civilians, Faqih Yonis used his influence to mediate between Ethiopian resistance figures and Italian forces, helping bring an end to violence against innocent people.
Legacy
His life represents an important part of Harar’s intellectual and Islamic heritage, preserving a legacy of scholarship, justice, courage, and service to the community.
